1.
The story's starting here, But aren't you wondering Why all the good times seem so far, and all the seasons have to change? But there is nothing I can say, Because time sways and people fade away I wish I could have written this story backwards from the end Your mirrored eyes reflect the sickest of times, and times like these make me want another kind of mind So this is your story, and I'm admitting That I flipped to the end so that all this would make sense
2.
The streets are empty, but the lights are on You can't afford them, but you can't turn them off It's always hot and crowded We're always running late Just chasing mediocrity On and on, with every step, We're sinking deeper in our debts Let's build some roads that won't send us sailing off of cliffs It's a government town full of angry people There's no reason to celebrate but we do it anyway How are we supposed to see the beauty in this city When it's hidden by the river, and the river's always dirty? All along it’s always been A place to live and hang my head But I’ll make something more of it I am staring up at grey even on the sunny days Let's make the change (and find our way) Let's build some roads, and take pride in home We'll never drown in this government town

Wide awake on the edge of town The world's on my back and it's breaking me down There's so much that I don't know, and so many places to go Time and time again we can complain that nothing ever stays the same, and nothing lasts forever Nothing last forever Keep on moving day to day, living life the same old way Getting tired of routine, but what does it all mean? Shut myself inside Looking for a place to hide I love it all and I hate it at the same time Lo and behold, I've fucked myself again It seems like these empty halls Have become the best of friends I wake up and hear the sound of empty hallways While looking through my doorway, and hear the sound and all the noise It's the sound of all the girls and boys Crying out just to be heard, but no one hears a single word Maybe it's because we're all imaginary Cheaping out comes at a higher price these days Learning is easy, you’ve just got to do it the hard way I love it all and hate it at the same time I love it all, but I hate you all
4.
The newspaper confirms my suspicion that there are no telephones in southern Ontario No industry thrives since 2008 I guess that broadband is down as well, in the place that you call home There's still a train to Mariposa, "Puffing up steam in the city station." Boards the city, every day at five There must be a new island of misfits who consume all your new days The rooted rolling stone Green grass brings the herd of yesterday's friends I'm no cowboy, no hound dog, but I hear elephants roar They found the phones in southern Ontario Will you ever remember, ‘cause I won’t forget, but I guess that maybe this is all in my head Will you ever remember, ‘cause I won’t forget, but I guess that all good things must come to an end
5.
Today is just another day in an ordinary place, with extraordinary things to face It's not fair that it gets dark at 5 p.m. 'round here, and I'm not thrilled about the weather There's something at the bottom, the bottom of every bottle Today is just another day in an ordinary place, with extraordinary things to face And I swear that you'll all make it on your own this year It feels like things are getting better There's something at the bottom, the bottom of every bottle I hope you find what you're looking for
